Pennant Fever

Some of us have been giving some thought to the idea of a "team" pennant. Taking the 32 active players from the SFLOI trading cards, I ranked players on fielding, hitting and base running. Once ranked, eight "core four teams" were created by using the formula as below. Every other team was assigned to the same league and this is how the 2009 SFLOI Pennant would look.

Team assignment formula based on my subjective/semi-objective ranking:
32,1,16,17
31,2,15,18
30,3,14,19
29,4,13,20
28,5,12,21
27,6,11,22
26,7,10,23
25,8,9,24

Top two teams in each league could combine then "draft" four more players from their own league to form the two 12-man squad to face off in the World Series.

While I know this is based on 2009 stats, I have to say, Doc, I kind of disagree with some of these projections. Looking at the AL, the Bronx Beetles seem to be the strongest of the four yet they come in fourth. Let me break it down.

Ian's team has a big disadvantage with Charlie in both defense and offense. While the other three are solid defesively, Ben doesn't offer enough pop to cover the squash of Charlie.

Alex's team seems, to me, a tad better with Dave R. being much better than Charlie, Alex on the elite level with Ian, and Paul being a younger version of Tony. And either Bill offers even more speed and on base percentage.

Dave S.'s team may be the weakest in the division with two weaker hitters, and their heavier hitters of Dave and Bob aren't really heavy hitters.

My team is the most evenly constructed of the four. It consists of two of the more elite (or at least close to it) hitters in Freddie and Jaime, and two decent players in me and Glen. Plus, I offer a bit of extra pop. None of us kill you on defense, and the obvious holes that plague the other teams, don't here.

The NL is closer to sounding right, although I think the race would be closer between the top two teams. The top two players on both teams are fairly even. Seung offers a ton of speed for the Villagers, which you would more compare to Bill on the Crashers. And if thats the case, Russ is maybe a tad better than Gil. So, again, I think that gap would be alot closer.

The order of the last two teams seems right as the combo of Brian and Chris is better than Derek and Jeff.

I was probably not suppossed analyze these, was I? Ha, sorry got carried away, but the AL rankings just seem wrong to me.
