Pinch Runners by Havelock Hewes

Our rule for pinch runners is that a player may have a pinch-runner from home or after he reaches a base safely if he has an injury which prevents him from running or makes it dangerous for him to run.  A player may not request a runner in order to get a strategic advantage for his team.
This season we have had a precipitous rise in the number of pinch runners requested.  Does this represent a reflection of our aging and ailing community?  Yes and no.  Marvin Cohen was told by his doctor that it would be dangerous for him to run the bases and Gil Schmerler's MD has advised that he have his knee replaced.  So, I think we can accept their requests as necessary.  Some others I'm not so sure about.  One player, who I will not name, reached first but did not request a runner until several members of his team suggested "don't you need a runner" and he asked for one.  You might think one solution to this would be to allow the opposing manager to pick among the available players a pinch runner.  However, we now have so many players who "require" pinch runners that only the relatively good runners are left.
I have thought of two solutions.  1) We could require the pinch runner to wear ankle weights in order to slow him down enough so that he would not be an improvement on the original runner, 2) We could shame the player by referring to him with a colorful nickname, such as "Gimpy,""Peg" or  "Poke."

Central Park field most likely will be closed on 09-22-13 due to the rain that's coming. We should play on the turf field on 54st. On that morning.

Wow a subject that I have had difficulties agreeing with from the SFLOI rule books. In the past I have always argued that a player needs to make it to first base thus run down the line before getting a runner. In my opinion some players took advantage of the younger quicker runners and had them run for them from home and giving them a still better advantage instead of them running. But SFLOI is a bit more soft and allows runners from home. I accept that when guys are above age 60 but if you are injured enough that you can't really run, then how are you playing the field and running for ground or fly balls? Whatever!!! Since I have been playing in a few leagues, I've seen a few pitch hitting rules that come into play which is the last batted out will be the pinch runner. However, a lot of teams take advantage of this and now leagues are enforcing only 2 players from each team get pinch runners unless the rare occasion when a player gets hurt on a play. Good luck with this guys.

Your opinion is irrelevant Derek, you hardly show up to play, so you should stop flapping your gums about this, and any topic!

Suppose someone doesn't pay their dues, but shows up every weekend anyway. What happens then...? Nothing!

U must b talking bout the 2 older fellas that each pitched a game this past Sunday. Havelock just bypasses a paid member like Zach nilva, who by the way pitches, and lets these no paying dues crumb-bum players pitch. FYI, havelock did it last week too! We the majority, should consider going on strike next season, so that havelock can stop the abusing the rules. He can play catch with himself on the empty softball field next season.

i have a solution...
make me treasurer next season
i was the treasurer a few years back and everyone paid...and if you don't pay you don't play
and if you don't want to pay for the full season we have a rule (not enforced) that you have to pay $4.00 for the day.

The issue is not who has paid or hasn't paid dues. That's another subject. The question was about pinch running and this league has this weak rule of running from home. No one else has it because its lame. Grow some balls and run to first.
