21 inning game? Havelock Hewes
On Sunday, Russ Rivera and I came up with a theme game idea. We were talking about how much fun extra-inning games are. What if we had an extra inning game without having to have a tie? Instead of playing three 7-inning games we would schedule one 21-inning game. To insure that the game is interesting we would employ a 5-run mercy rule (any team with a five-run lead at the end of an inning from the seventh inning on would automatically win). Each team would use three pitchers in multiples of seven innings.
I'm interested in getting feedback and discussion on this. Please comment.

Now which part of extra inning games do we want to simulate in our theme game? Their length? or the sudden death atmosphere? If we want the former, the a 21 inning game would be the way to go ... but the latter...
We could do 20 1 inning games and whichever team had the lead in the bottom of the inning would win.
Whoever bats after the hitter who made the last out made the last out or drove in the winning run would lead off the next game and we could switch home and away teams.
We could switch up teams every 7 innings...
Problems include updating the stats for somebody who goes 15- 6 on the day ....
I think what we want is to explore different possibilities in the game. The novelty of the game in itself is exciting. I once played a softball game on a frozen lake in Cooperstown, New York. It was a game between the Pharmacists and the Lumberjacks, but they didn't have enough Pharmacists, so they asked me to play.
I dont think this is the greatest idea. What makes extra innings so great is that it's rare and it intensifies a game. I think we should leave extra innings for when a game is tied after 7 innings
Sal Cipriano organized a 14-inning game for a charity event a few years ago. I played, as did Marvin, who handled 14 innings of chances flawlessly at first base. For us, however, you've got to consider the impact this would have on the pennant race.
